Back in January, President Bush announced the new NASA program. Read my previous blog entry about it: The New NASA Program. Basically, over the next twenty years NASA will phase out the shuttle program and stop new commitments to the International Space Station. The money saved (billions and billions) will go to reforging NASA with Apollo-style rockets that can take us back to the moon and on to Mars.
Since January, President Bush hasn't said a peep about it. Almost everyone has taken the silence to mean that the President has cooled on the idea. After all, it wasn't a popular announcement; it did not measure up to a similar annoucement made by JFK back in May of 1961. One can understand that the president might want to reneg on the deal.
Not so. There is another reason the President has kept quiet. That reason is, the President does not want the public to think his space proposal is merely meant to be a distraction from his other troubles.
Now there is word out that the President will be delivering a speech within the next couple months regarding his space proposal.
Hopefully the speech won't be thought of as a distraction. We'll see in a couple months, I suppose.
Hi Eric! I believe that there may be a Big Space Surprize to be announced nearer to the Presidential Election. Perhaps V.P. Cheney will be forge ahead into the Unknown Universe in search of Osama...just like Capt. Kirk searched for Spock...Perhaps Space (Mars, Jupiter) is where Mr. Rumsfeld will finally locate the WMD he is searching for. Live Long and Prosper! Love from Mom

Well things don't look too good for Bush with some recent news.. and in a few months is the election so it'll be hard for me to not think it's another gimmick from Bush. Infact, it seems smart to make these announcements closer to election time since that is when people will be voting anyhow..
