Back in February I took my first trip to Europe. London was great and I'd love to go back someday. But I know I can do better than London.
This July I'll be taking a trip to Budapest, Hungary.
I've done some reading up on Budapest. Budapest has its own personality to go with a rich history. Budapest is the jewel of Europe which has gone largely undiscovered by tourists, because for years it was part of Soviet Russia. In other words, like Austin in the 1980's, minus the Communism of course.
Even so, I probably would not go just for that reason.
A friend of mine from Chicago now lives there. Having a friend who can show me around makes all the difference in the world. Plus it will certainly be nice to see a friend I haven't seen in four years.
Because I know mom will worry about me... let me say - Budapest is a very safe place. I feel more safe travelling to Budapest than just about anywhere else in Europe, especially since I'll be with a friend.
My friend, Sister Krystiana, is from Poland and speaks well of Budapest. She tells me their only problem is poverty, so take allot of spending cash or plastic spending cash to be safe. Robberies and street-thugs are rampant, but generally speaking the people there are great folks. My Nanny, Parankah, was from Russia, and I have never feared the Russian People, now that Kruschev is dead and gone, he wanted to bury us all. When are you going? PS, I do expect at least a card while you are there. Salut!
Erika knows so well I love Russians ;-) But true we were not part of the Soviet Union :)
As for safety, you beware of pickpockets and car theft just as in the US I suppose, but no, you shouldn't expect someone to just rob you like that on the street! Strange idea :)
You are most welcome in Budapest and you will see, having a friend here does mean a great possibility to get more of them :) You will have fun for sure it's only up to you.
I had an American boyfriend who was crazy about Hungary and Budapest. This is a very civilzed and beautiful place. You will enjoy the bars, concerts, the great food, the Hungarian wines (!!!). No one will rob you and you will be very surprised by the standard of life here. I have to add that the communist are has ended almost 30 years ago and here we (I mean our parents and grandparents) experienced only the soft side of communism....so it was not that bad...(noone had to be a workaholic to make ends meet - that is a great advantage, isn't is???)
