Here's something to be excited about if you're a Verizon Wireless customer. They're releasing their iPhone knock-off sometime in November. In keeping tradition with other LG phones, it's got a less-than-imaginative name. It's called Voyager. Still, despite its name, there's plenty to be excited about.

It's got a 320x240 touch screen display. What to do on that display? Verizon's service offers streaming television and an internet connection for web browsing. (In addition, I'm hoping I can get some sort of SSH client installed.)

Underneath the main display, Voyager hinges open to reveal a secondary 320x240 display and a full QWERTY keypad. What to do on that keypad? Text messaging or shelling if I can get my SSH client installed. (Though I'm not sure how well vi with work on a diminutive keypad.)

Other goodies: stereo Bluetooth (most likely with OBEX disabled, unfortunately) for headphones and earpieces, support for various audio formats including mp3, 2 megapixel camera, 8 gigabyte microSD slot, and USB.

Some things I wish Voyager had that it doesn't: WiFi connectivity and Bluetooth OBEX.

For comparison, iPhone has WiFi, I'm not sure about OBEX. iPhone does not have a QWERTY keypad or a secondary display. Otherwise, Voyager and iPhone are roughly equal.

Good news for me - my Verizon plan expired last month. As such, I'm eligible for a $100 discount on a new phone if I keep my plan.

I heard that Google is coming out w/ some phone in Feb-2008. If that's the case, it'll most likely be better than the iphone (?)

I'd love it if Google came out with a mobile phone. But I seriously doubt Google will ever release a mobile phone. I wrote about it way back in March. Basically, Google is a software company. Not a hardware company.

I am so proud of you both :-) for being highly skilled in speaking Techno, it is America's 2nd language.

If you have your contract expired, go with the iphone, they are fantastic.

You can unlock your iPhone (thus voiding the warranty) and use it on Verizon's network. I work with a guy who has one on Verizon. The iPhone makes all other phones seem like an old Motorola brick in comparison. I'm glad to see some serious competition coming into the market.

I agree completely. I was highly bummed when Verizon and Apple couldn't reach an agreement. I love the iPhone. I also love my contract with Verizon. I've kept the same $34.99 contract since 2001. That plan price has never changed, although I did add $5 for an unlimited texting and data plan. I'm sticking with Verizon, hoping Voyager has the same coolness as iPhone.

He better not let his phone update to the newer firmware. Apple put in a bomb which will render his iPhone useless.

Did you watch US vs Switzerland soccer game? Was great match.

I doubt Verizon will ever release a really hackable phone. Check out http://openmoko.org/ . I suspect someone has built a terminal and ssh on it ;-)

Hitch Hicker - I missed the match again! I need to set me DVR on those. Otherwise I forget. Once the qualifiers start up I'll watch with earnest.

Tom - thanks for the link. That's awesome. I wish I had time to contribute to projects like that. I did u-boot and busybox and NetApp.
