I'm not entirely sure of the name. It's "Bear River Lake Resort" or "Bear River Reservoir" or "Big Bear Lake" or something like that. At any rate, the name definitely includes the word "Bear" despite there being no bears in the area.
Here's a Google Map of the area. It's a nice diversion off the beaten paths of South Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, just about equidistant between the two of them.
It's hard to gauge scale from the above two pictures. The granite domes are much smaller than Yosemite's, but are large enough for a nice multi-hour hike. There appear to be highly challenging hikes on the north side of the reservoir, but we didn't go there.
As far as camping, we had no reservation but acquired a very nice campsite with almost no hassle, due to luck mostly. As a camping back-up plan, you can pitch a tent for free almost anywhere within a national forest ("dispersed camping"). Bear River Lake falls within California's expansive El Dorado National Forest.

Looks heavenly!

Agree, granite domes look much smaller than they really are...making your pose for the first picture not so dangerous at all (despite the fact that 1 mis-step and you could be at the bottom of the valley...in several pieces)
