Showing in theatres:
  • Pirates of the Caribbean 3
  • Shrek 3
  • Spider-Man 3
  • Ocean's Eleven 3
I'm usually the last person to pick up on a pattern, but I think there might be one there.

There's also a secondary pattern: movie theatres charge too much. Atleast here in the Bay Area. One ticket is $10.50. But you never go to a movie alone. So double that to $21. A small popcorn and squishee runs $7. Now we're at $28. Plus gas. Plus the inconvenience of driving and parking.

I'm wondering why anyone goes to the theatres anymore. Of course there are the online alternatives, and I think over the next decade they'll help smash the movie industry to bits, along with broadband streaming movies to the home.

But online alternatives and broadband streaming don't solve the original problem. That being that today's movies aren't. Aren't original. They're all retreads. Think about it. Even last year's megamovie King Kong was a retread of a retread! It just seems that Hollywood can't come up with fresh ideas anymore.

The solution to that problem is, I think, something like YouTube. Where individuals post their own movies online to be viewed by that masses. Obviously today's YouTube-quality material doesn't match up with Hollywood's quality, but over time you'll see the difference diminish.

What would really be interesting is if some local cinema put together a "best of YouTube" collection today. Put together about 90 minutes of the best material on YouTube. I'm wondering how many seats would be filled for $10 each.

We just saw Spider Man 3 at the IMAX. $15 x 2 = $30 plus $9 for parking = $39. No popcorn or drinks. :-(
Stacey —
This is not new. There hasn't been a really fresh mainstream flick out in years.
Ngan —
One other alternative is to watch all 4 movies at once.

Never saw Pirates I. Tried to rent it yesterday, and Blockbuster was sold out! I think this is another part of the sequel strategy. Sales of the prequels get a big bump.

We rarely go to the theater any more (haven't been at all in the past 4 months for some reason.) Now that everybody has giant televisions and 5.1 sound or better, the only compelling reason to go is so that you can talk about the movie with your friends. Dinner and a movie is still a good date idea, though.

Pirates of the Carribean II is showing at the Wimberley Corral Theatre this weekend, and even if it is pouring rain it will be allot of fun. Let me see, we bring our own snacks (last time we had bbq ribs and chips) and bring our own drinks (liquor is allowed by the way) and bring our own blankies to snuggle up in, we can let the little kids run free until they fall asleep on their blankies...we get all of this for about $10 for two people. Let me know if you want to come visit, the guest room is free.
Stacey —
I have officially seen all 3 now. Shrek 3 was good, the other 2 not so good.

Have you ever done a meme? Now's your chance - I have tagged you.
