My previous entry was about water vapor in an extrasolar planet's atmosphere. This entry is about two extrasolar planets in the same class as Earth.
The discovery of Gliese 581 c and Gliese 581 d were formally announced last week. Both of them are planets orbiting a (relatively) nearby star, and both of them could possibly be the right temperature and size to have liquid water oceans on their surface.
This news is incredibly exciting! In part because it's fun to think about an extra-terrestrial ocean lapping up against an extra-terrestrial beach, just waiting for us to arrive a couple hundred years from now. Also in part because the discovery is proof that today we've got the requisite technologies for such discoveries, and we should expect more of them to come.
I'm adding systemic to the blog roll in the left-hand pane. systemic is written by a collection of professors from mostly UC-Santa Cruz, who do extrasolar planet hunting and characterizations. They've also got some cool photography and PhotoShop skills to lead off most entries. Check them out!

That would be awesome to choose which planet to live on. Surely would put a dent to the real estate market in California.

I like the idea of life on other planets; I think that living in Wimberley is not unlike living on another planet. The Corral Theater is opening this weekend with a new sci-fi space movie. Maybe Tim and I will BBQ some ribs and go, rain is predicted.
