Last Friday I won a random drawing. You know, one of those things where there are 1000 names in a hat. Someone reaches into the hat and pulls out a random name. I have never won a drawing before. Never.
I have terrible luck when it comes to drawings. Always have. I was in a drawing in college one time where they promised everybody would win something. Turns out they lied because there were 26 names and 25 prizes - I was the one person who did not win. Like I said, terrible luck. Which is why I was so surprised when I won last Friday.
I didn't win anything really cool. Just a $50 certificate to amazon.com. Which is sort of a misnomer. Because I know I'll end up spending $75 or so. I guess that's amazon's strategy. They sell $50 certificates for $25, knowing the recipient will spend $25 more than the certificate's value.
Anyway, amazon has a new feature. It's really cool. You can listen to the first 30 seconds of the first few songs off of any album. Plus, they link to other bands that you might enjoy based on what you're listening to and what you've previously purchased. I've become one highly educated music shopper. I've listened to 100 bands through amazon's feature. The one problem I've discovered is that if I listen to the albums that I already own and love, there's no way I'd purchase them based on what amazon plays.
Which makes me think I'm missing out on some really great music!
Anybody out there have music they'd recommend? I've got $50 to spend!
Just to give you some guidance on what I might like...
I do like college radio bands. I do like local bands. What genre I'm not too picky. I like bands where I can pay $5 to see them in concert, and be 10 feet away from the stage.
I do not like big name bands. I probably won't like it if it's played on commercial radio. No Staind, no Incubus, no John Maier, etc.
