I'm really proud of myself. For this entire week so far I've made it into work at 8:30 am. Well sort of. I've made it into the workplace fitness center at 8:30 am. I don't actually make it to my desk until 10 am or so. Anyway, the fitness center is sponsoring a contest. Whichever team works out the most for the next two months wins Adidas gear. The rules stipulate that 1/2 of your workout time can be outside the fitness center, playing stuff like tennis, soccer, and the like. I contacted the rules coordinator and asked if foosball counts. Sadly, she said, "No," and followed up with, "All the software programmers have been asking me that."

I made it home tonight and flipped on the tube. Since all you folk with DISH Network don't have CBS, I'll update you about what was showing. Because, you know, it was SOOOO interesting. *cough*. 60 minutes was on. They ran a segment about the gay marriages in San Francisco. I really had no idea that some people are so upset about it.

Apparently, the people who are opposed to gay marriage have two arguments:
  1. a traditional holier than thou argument: it's a sin, and,
  2. the slippery slope argument: soon we'll have people marrying dogs.
I just totally do not understand the first argument. I don't understand why it's a sin, or more of a sin than, say, bearing false witness or coveting your neighbor's wife (we've got plenty of both, yet nobody protests against it). Also, so what if someone else commits a sin? That's someone else's problem, not mine.

The second argument I understand. Don't totally agree with it. But I do understand. To it I would say, if someone is stupid enough to marry their dog, let them go for it. Whatever makes them happy. Yeah, that means they get all sorts of benefits for their spouse... err... dog, but that's a problem with their benefits contract and not with their lifestyle.

Also, The Simpsons were on. I swear, if you've got enough channels, you can find The Simpsons every minute of every day. I'm not complaining, mind you. In fact, I think DISH Network should replace CBS with the The Simpsons Network.

Glad to know I didn't miss much :-) I'm glad it wasn't gone on one of the days I do watch CBS -- that would be Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Regards to #1 -- government and church are suppose to be separated, so if it is a sin based on one's belief why does that have to do with what government allows? Gosh.. okay.. I won't keep ranting..
Stacey
You know, I am getting confused about the sin thing. Ok, the Bible says that you are not supposed to be gay. It is a sin. But the Bible also says that Jesus died for our sins and paid for them. So, I can go two ways with this. Either it's a free-for-all-sinfest or you try not to sin because you love God. Whatever. As long as I am not the one sinning, I guess it's none of my business.

What's up with you programmers? In at 10 out at...?
Steve —
Eric, you are right. One sin is not worse than any other. If you believe in God, then you understand that all sin separates us from God. Furtunately for us we live under grace, thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus, and not under the law that God gave to Moses. This law is way more than the 10 commandments (read Exodus and Leviticus if you want all the details.) Anyone who has accepted Jesus in their heart as their Lord and savior, receives God's grace. Period. This means theives, adulterers, homosexuals... everybody. We're all sinners. In fact, Jesus spent most of his time speaking to and teaching tax collectors, thieves, prostitutes, adulterers, and the like. So, the people who call homosexuals sinners are like the pot who called the kettle black. Nobody has the right to judge another person.

I don't think that's what this issue is about, and that's certainly not what it's about to me.

I have a challenge for you. Give me one example of an action that will not affect somebody else in some way. For good or bad.
Eric
Then what's the issue about?

The dude on 60 Minutes was pretty clear. To him the issue is about stopping people from sinning. Hopefully you've got a better explanation.
"I have a challenge for you. Give me one example of an action that will not affect somebody else in some way. For good or bad."
Hmmm, ok. I just created a web page on the Internet. I'm not going to tell anyone where it is. No one will ever see it. In fact, if I hadn't told you about it, you wouldn't even know it exists.
Steve —
Ok. So you had to register the domain name, and you are using storage on some service provider's server, right? You are also paying that service provider to host your website, right?

Like any other issue we debate, the purpose is to determine what's best for our society. We'll never stop sin. I'll bet 60 minutes brought that guy on so they could maximize their ratings... not so they could really get to the bottom of the issue. Remember your comments about the biased media?
Eric
The answers are no, sort of, and sort of. Anyway, you're confusing the issue.

The first reason I am opposed to gay marriage is because _________.
The second reason I am opposed to gay marriage is because _________.
.
.
.
The Nth reason I am opposed to gay marriage is because _________.

Then we can get some useful debate going.
